Elfie Semotan / Erwin Wurm
Photographer Elfie Semotan and artist Erwin Wurm take on unusual dual roles as both the photographers providing the concept as well as the performers.
Aus den Wolken (From the Clouds), 2011
Erwin Wurm depicts Elfie Semotan as a goddess who has fallen to earth and landed on the 35-meter-high roof of WIEN MITTE. Her flight ends where the last stage of the building will end. Although Elfie Semotan prefers to be behind the camera, she makes an exception here to step in front the lens as the protagonist.
Completing in the Mind, 2011
Elfie Semotan presents Erwin Wurm in an unfinished interior on the fourth floor of the building. Sitting on a bed, her fellow artist poses as a melancholy man entirely in keeping with the traditional portrayal of lone wolves popularized above all by American films and painting.
Artist and photographer Elfie Semotan (* 1941) has always impressively lived up to the challenge of reaching a mass audience through sophisticated work. The images from her legendary campaigns for Palmers and Römerquelle are among the most successful in the history of Austrian advertising and have long since entered the country’s collective visual memory. In Elfie Semotan’s work, art and fashion inspire one another: Unconstrained by genres, the photographer’s view is equally capable of pinpointing social situations in stylized tableaux or, conversely, discovering a tendency to stylization in supposedly natural attitudes.
