Fertigstellung der Basis (Completing the Foundation), 2010
While the construction site still looks like a concrete wasteland above ground, highly specialized foundation work is underway below. Difficult to identify without context, Gottfried Helnwein chose this underground landscape as the setting for his photo shoot, the results of which are reminiscent of stills from an adventure film: Children in various costumes cautiously explore new territory, with girls taking on the lead roles. It seems as though they might well take over the building once it is finished.
Gottfried Helnwein (* 1948) has been creating controversy since the early 1970s with his now iconic hyper-realistic self-portraits and depictions of children. The artist picks up on the imagery and aims of Viennese Actionism, among other things, which he combines with the principles of Pop Art. His work focuses on the subject of violence as well as the human face, in particular the specific expressivity of children’s faces.
